The state of West Virginia employs only one standard certificate for qualified teachers, the Professional Teaching Certificate. The Professional Teaching Certificate is issued to an individual to work in WV public schools who has attended an in-state institution’s state approved teacher preparation program. Out-of-state applicants are typically issued an out-of-state equivalent of the Professional Teaching Certificate. Depending on experience and qualifications, Professional Teaching Certificate can be renewed on a 5-year basis or become a Permanent Certificate. Advanced Credentials are awarded to educators for completing professional development, coursework, and/or testing which exceeds the requirements of a professional certificate.
