12-Hour Teaching Permit (OH)

The 12-Hour Teaching Permit is for those teaching the subject named on the permit for no more than 12 hours per week. Valid only in the school district that engages the non-licensed individual to teach.

This permit is only for NON LICENSED OR NON CERTIFICATED teachers. Anyone who holds a teaching license is not eligible for a 12 hour permit.

Minimum Academic Background
In most states, teachers must have a minimum academic background for certification.
The following is required for this route:
BA Degree + Major in Content Language

Applicant must hold either a major in the Content Language or significant
experience related to the Content Language.

As of 2016, No Basic Skills Exams Required

Teacher Preparation
In most states, teachers are required to complete training in education methods through a teacher program.
The following is required for this route:

School District initial orientation that includes information about the students and community to be served; school policies, procedures, and routines; courses of study, competency-based education programs, teaching and learning styles, growth and development characteristics appropriate to the age being taught, pupil assessment procedures, and responsibilities for lesson plans; the layout and facilities of the assigned school buildings or buildings; the nature of the teaching assignment; and any other additional information required for a nonlicensed individual to be adequately prepared for the teaching assignment.

Content Language and English Language Proficiency
In most states, teachers are required to submit evidence of content language proficiency and English language proficiency through coursework, exams, or degree evaluations.

Applying to the State
In most states, teachers must apply to the state Individually or through their local School District, or Teacher Program Institution. Requirements for the application are outlined below:
