Advanced degree licenses are available only in shortage areas at the middle school, junior high, and high school setting. Applicants must a master’s degree or higher, and verify at least one (1) academic year of experience teaching students in a middle school, high school or college classroom setting.

After receiving an Initial Practitioner License, a beginning teacher shall participate in a two (2) year beginning teacher residency program to be eligible for a Proficient Practitioner License.

An individual with an IP license may renew that license twice upon application. If after the third IP license has been issued (second renewal), the license has still not completed the residency program that is required to obtain a five-year Proficient Practitioner license, then the license holder must complete a Professional Growth Plan (PGP) or take Pearson IN Core Content Area exam to start the six-year IP cycle over.

Notes:
When applying for original license there are 2 fees associated with the licensure: an Evaluation Fee and a License Application Fee.

Effective July 1, 2013, the department may not issue an initial teaching license at any grade level to an applicant for an initial teaching license unless the applicant shows evidence that the applicant has successfully completed education and training on the prevention of child suicide and the recognition of signs that a student may be considering suicide. Only those applicants who are “finalists” for a position need an expanded criminal history check.
