Minimum Academic Background
In most states, teachers must have a minimum academic background for certification.
The following is required for this route:
BA Degree + Enrolled in State Approved Teacher Education Program

GPA: 2.5

Prior Certification: Must NOT have Current (STATE) Certification

In most states, teachers must verify basic skills in English (Reading and Writing) and Mathematics through coursework, exams, or degree evaluations.

Notes:
A Praxis II subject area test is currently not required for Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian.

For Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, applicant must submit documentation of one of the following:
1) Submission of a bachelor’s or higher degree, from a senior institution that was regionally accredited at the time the degree was earned, with a non-education major in the teaching field; OR
2) Submission of the completed TEACHING FIELD COURSEWORK chart verifying credit earned for at least 32 semester hours of credit, including 19 semester hours of upper division credit in the teaching field.

GENERAL NOTES FOR THIS ROUTE
An ABC allows a superintendent or administrator to employ an applicant full-time in a teaching field while the applicant completes the requirements of the ABC approach to earning a Class B Professional Educator Certificate in that teaching field.
