The Alternative License was created for aspiring educators who already have specific content expertise but need training to learn how to deliver instruction.

The Alternative License is valid for 1-3 years depending on the duration of the Alternative License Program. Most, including world languages, are 1-2 years.

Minimum Academic Background
In most states, teachers must have a minimum academic background for certification.
The following is required for this route:
Completed BA Degree

Prior Certification: Must NOT have Current (STATE) Certification

As of 2016, No Basic Skills Exams Required

Content Language and English Language Proficiency
In most states, teachers are required to submit evidence of content language proficiency and English language proficiency through coursework, exams, or degree evaluations.
The following is required for this route:

Exam(s): PLACE required

Will NOT Accept Scores from Out of State

Colorado only accepts Content Language exams: PLACE. PLACE includes recorded components.

Applicants may substitute 24 credit hours in the content language for the PLACE test.

State may review transcripts to determine content language proficiency.

In most states, teachers must apply to the state Individually or through their local School District, or Teacher Program Institution. Requirements for the application are outlined below:

Upon completion of the Alternative Licensing Program, candidates will apply for the Initial Teacher License which is valid for 3 years.

All applications must be completed online. Applications not completed in 14 days will be automatically deleted from the system and all data may be lost.
Colorado will not accept fingerprint/background checks completed from other states.
