Alternative Placement Program (OK)

Description
The Oklahoma Alternative Placement Program provides an opportunity for individuals with non-teaching degrees to teach in Oklahoma accredited schools.
Certificate Valid for 3 years
Only for individuals who have completed a major field of study that corresponds to the area of certification being sought.

Notes
Anyone who has been denied admittance to an approved teacher program, or enrolled in and subsequently failed required teacher education courses necessary to meet the minimum requirements of a teacher program, is not eligible for the Oklahoma Alternative Placement Program.

Minimum Academic Background
In most states, teachers must have a minimum academic background for certification.

Teacher Preparation
In most states, teachers are required to complete training in education methods through a teacher program.
The following is required for this route:

Complete a professional education component (college semester hours or Oklahoma State Department of Education-approved professional development) of a minimum of 12 semester hours or 180 clock hours and a maximum of 18 semester hours or 270 clock hours. The number of hours required is based on degree level and experience.

Notes:
Applicants are advised not to take any examinations until they have been determined eligible in a written memorandum from an Oklahoma Alternative Placement Specialist to seek certification through the alternative placement process.

Applicants will be provided with information regarding the pedagogical training requirements at the time you they notified of eligibility for the Alternative Placement Program.

ACTFL OPI and WPT may be taken if no Oklahoma Subject Area Test (OSAT) exists. Minimum passing standard: Intermediate/High (OPI and WPT)

Native American Languages:
Applicants must demonstrate proficiency in the Native American Language sought through an assessment determined by a federally-recognized tribe or tribal entity.

Renewal: Nonrenewable
The professional education component and Oklahoma Professional Teaching Exam (OPTE) must be completed within three years of initial certification. Therefore, the initial certificate is not renewable.

All certificate holders must be in compliance with Oklahoma state income tax laws before a teaching certificate can be issued or renewed.

Notes:

All first-time credentialed Oklahoma teachers are required to have on file with the Oklahoma State Board of Education (OSBE) a current Oklahoma criminal history record from the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) as well as a national fingerprint-based criminal history record provided by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Fee = $59
