Description
The Alternative Program Teaching Permit is for applicants hired by a school district, who have completed at least 50% of an approved teacher program, OR hold a current regular teaching certificate in another state.

Minimum Academic Background
In most states, teachers must have a minimum academic background for certification.
The following is required for this route:
BA Degree + Enrolled in State Approved Teacher Education Program
BA Degree + Completed State Approved Teacher Education Program

Notes
The candidate must have completed the required portion of an approved teacher education program including: Fifty percent (50%) of the pre-student teaching requirements including a course in teaching methods AND Three-fourths (75%) of the requirements for at least one subject or field endorsement. (These program requirements are determined by the college certification officer at the teacher education institution where you have set up your program).

While basic skills requirements must be met for full, initial certification, candidates granted the Provisional Commitment Certificate have one year to take the Praxis I test in reading, writing and math.

Notes:
State may review transcripts to determine content language proficiency.

Applicant must complete the required portion of an approved teacher program including:

Applicants must have completed 24 of their required 30 credit hours of coursework in the Content Language.

ACTFL OPI and WPT
Passing Score: Advanced-Low: French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, and/or Spanish

Exception:
Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean
Passing Score on ACTFL OPI, WPT of Intermediate High OR 15 hours of coursework

Applicants may submit a transcript with Human Relations coursework to be considered in lieu of course. Applicants may write a narrative describing professional experiences that have led to expertise in the areas of Human Relations.

Teachers must complete all Basic Skills exams, Special Education requirements and TEP in order to apply for Initial Teaching Certificate.

Notes:
Fingerprinting for applicants who have not lived in Nebraska continuously for the last 5 years.
Must meet the Recency requirement in one of the following two ways:
Must have taught one full year during the last 5 years or must have completed 6 credit hours in coursework related to education or content language in the last 5 years.

Applicants may submit a transcript with Human Relations coursework to be considered in lieu of this course.

Applicants may write a narrative describing professional experiences that have led to expertise in the 6 areas of Human Relations.

The Human Relations requirement cannot be waived or postponed.

Fingerprints may be taken at any law enforcement office with LiveScan technology. Fee will be waived.
