Minimum Academic Background

Teacher Preparation
In most states, teachers are required to complete training in education methods through a teacher program.
The following is required for this route:

Course needed: At least 12 additional semester hours beyond the IPTI of professional education coursework, from a college or university approved to prepare teachers, in the principles and practices of teaching, student development and learning, pupil assessment procedures, curriculum development, classroom management and teaching methodology..
Intensive Pedagogical Training Institute (IPTI). The IPTI fee is $200.

In most states, teachers are required to submit evidence of content language proficiency and English language proficiency through coursework, exams, or degree evaluations.

    Arabic, Chinese-Cantonese, Chinese-Mandarin, French, German, Greek (Modern), Haitian Creole, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Serbian, Spanish, Turkish, Urdu, Vietnamese

Course needed: 24 semester (36 quarter) hours in the world language to be taught with a 2.5 GPA or higher consisting of coursework well distributed across the subject area, showing increasing depth and complexity and with sufficient advanced coursework in the subject area may be accepted in lieu of exam(s).

Reading:

Course needed: 3 semester hour course in the teaching of reading in the content area.

Notes:
In the second year of teaching under the alternative resident educator license, the educator must take OAE Assessment of Professional Knowledge: Multi-Age (PK-12).

Extensive work experience directly related to the area to be taught may also be considered by the Ohio Credential Review Board.

–Successful completion of an additional 12 semester hours of professional education coursework;
–Successfully complete a 3 semester hour course in the teaching of reading in the content area;
–Successful completion of the OAE Assessment of Professional Knowledge: Multi-Age (PK-12).

Notes:
Upon successful completion of all the ITPI requirements, an Alternative Resident Educator License Statement of Eligibility will be issued for a $160 fee and may be used to seek employment.

After you complete the IPTI, the Office of Educator Licensure will mail you a statement of eligibility for the alternative license. The statement of eligibility can be presented to prospective employers. Once hired, you may apply for the four-year alternative resident educator license (your employing school/district will be required to sign your application for the four-year resident educator license).
