American Indian Certificate (ID)

Description
An American Indian languages teaching authorization will qualify the authorized individual to accept a teaching position or assignment in any school district of the state that offers or permits courses in an American Indian language.

Certificate Valid for 5 years
A holder of an American Indian languages teaching authorization who does not also have a teaching certificate may not teach any subject other than the American Indian language for which he or she is authorized to teach.

Notes
Each Indian tribe will provide to the state board of education the names of those highly and uniquely qualified individuals who have been designated to teach the tribe’s native language. Upon receiving the names of American Indian languages teachers designated by an Indian tribe, the state board is directed to authorize those individuals as American Indian languages teachers according to board rules.

Minimum Academic Background
In most states, teachers must have a minimum academic background for certification.

The state board of education shall not require an American Indian languages teacher who has obtained tribal designation to teach a native language to hold a specific academic degree or to complete a teacher education program.

Content Language and English Language Proficiency
In most states, teachers are required to submit evidence of content language proficiency and English language proficiency through coursework, exams, or degree evaluations.

$40 Fingerprinting fee
All adults working in Idaho public schools (certificated and non-certificated), or applying for certification, are currently required to have the results of a background investigation check on file with the State Department of Education.
