Certificate Reciprocity Approach (Out-Of-State) (AL)

Through the Certificate Reciprocity Approach to certification, Alabama recognizes valid professional educator certificates issued by other states, the District of Columbia, U.S. Territories, or the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) as the basis to offer professional certification in Alabama. The certificate(s) presented must be at a degree level, in a teaching field or instructional support area, and at a grade level in which Alabama offers comparable certification.

Prior Certification: Must Hold Current (STATE) Certification

As of 2016, No Basic Skills Exams Required

Teacher Preparation
In most states, teachers are required to complete training in education methods through a teacher program.

Required tests will be individually prescribed by the Teacher Certification Section of the Office of Teaching and Leading when eligibility for certification has been determined.

Certificate reciprocity provides recognition of valid professional certificates in teaching fields issued by other states, the District of Columbia, U.S. Territories, or DoDEA if they are comparable to professional educator certificates offered in Alabama in terms of certificate type, areas, grade levels, and degree levels. An applicant may be eligible for Alabama certification only if Alabama offers a comparable certificate to the professional certificate issued by another state or DoDEA.
