The Certification-Only Program is for individuals not wishing to participate full-time or pursue a master’s degree through one of the other alternate paths to certification.

Basic Skills
In most states, teachers must verify basic skills in English (Reading and Writing) and Mathematics through coursework, exams, or degree evaluations.

Notes
Minimum of 2.50 GPA or higher on a 4.00 scale to enter a private provider program; Minimum of a 2.20 or higher on a 4.00 scale to enter a college or university program. (State law requires teacher candidate to have a 2.50 GPA for certification, upon program completion.)

Individuals with an earned graduate degree from a regionally accredited institution may be exempt from the Praxis Core Academic Skills exams requirement.

Applicants may take the Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators or ACT or SAT.

Teacher Preparation
In most states, teachers are required to complete training in education methods through a teacher program.

Notes:
Candidates may complete either student teaching or Internship (employment with a school district).

No exam required for Latin. Must have completed 31 semester hours of coursework.

Candidate may apply for the Level 1 professional license upon successful completion of all program requirements.

The PL2 is valid for one school year and may be renewed annually up to three years. The candidate must remain enrolled in the Certification-Only Program and fulfill a minimum of nine (9) semester hours of coursework or equivalent contact hours per year (to the extent that required semester hours remain in the program to be completed), teaching assignments, and prescribed activities identified by the program provider.

Candidates are issued a Practitioner License 2 (PL2) upon completion of approved classroom readiness training and employment in an approved school. A Professional Level License is issued after successful completion of all program requirements.

PL 3 applications must be submitted to the
Department by the Louisiana employing school
system.

GENERAL NOTES FOR THIS ROUTE
The Certification-Only Program offers flexibility in delivery (e.g., face to face and/or online). Offered by approved providers, both private entities and higher education institutions. Total Hours in the Program—27 to 33 credit hours (or equivalent 405-495 contact hours)
