Description
A Conditional Certificate is issued only at the request of a local school system superintendent to an applicant employed in a local school system who does not meet all certification requirements.

Minimum Academic Background
In most states, teachers must have a minimum academic background for certification.

Completed BA Degree

Prior Certification: Must NOT have Current (STATE) Certification

Basic Skills
In most states, teachers must verify basic skills in English (Reading and Writing) and Mathematics through coursework, exams, or degree evaluations.

Notes
In place of the Praxis Core tests, Maryland will accept the following options from candidates: SAT, ACT, GRE

Teacher Preparation

Renewal: Renewable
To get a second Conditional Certificate, a teacher must complete a minimum of 12 credits and must meet the Maryland qualifying score on Praxis I. If the original conditional evaluation requires fewer than 12 credits, all requirements including the required Praxis I and Praxis II (or ACTFL) tests must be completed during the two-year validity period of the first certificate.

GENERAL NOTES FOR THIS ROUTE
Conditionally certified teachers, unlike alternatively prepared teachers in Maryland, are not accorded “highly qualified teacher” status as required by the No Child Left Behind Act.
