Minimum Academic Background
In most states, teachers must have a minimum academic background for certification.
The following is required for this route:

Notes
An applicant may be exempt from the GACE Program Admission assessment if he/she holds an MA or higher from a Georgia Professional Standards Commission (GPSC) approved teacher program.

The GRE may also be accepted.

ACTFL OPI is the only requirement for Swahili.

Greek (Classical) is exempt from the Content Assessment because ACTFL assessments for Greek are not Greek Classical. Contact Georgia for Greek Content Language Requirements.

Induction to Professional Certificate: In order to convert an Induction Certificate to a Professional Certificate, applicants must complete the requirements outlined in the correspondence issued with the Induction Certificate. Document requirements for the application are outlined in the original correspondence.

Notes:
Note: Applicants who have not met the employment requirement, but who meet all other requirements under Pathway 1 qualify for a Georgia Letter of Certification Eligibility. Upon employment, the applicant will be issued an Induction Certificate.
Some teacher programs require a criminal history background check prior to student teaching. Applicants must check with individual teacher program for requirements.

Georgia will not require a criminal history background check or fingerprinting for teacher certification application unless the applicant has been convicted of a misdemeanor or felony involving moral turpitude in another state. If this is the case, he/she must submit an FBI criminal history report with the application.

Once an applicant is hired by a Georgia school system, however, he/she must submit to a criminal record background check. Background checks vary by employing agency.
Induction to Professional Certificate: In order to convert an Induction Certificate to a Professional Certificate, applicants must complete the requirements outlined in the correspondence issued with the Induction Certificate. Document requirements for the application are outlined in the original correspondence.

GENERAL NOTES FOR THIS ROUTE
In order to be eligible for full certification applicants must be employed by a Georgia local unit of administration (LUA) at the time of application. However, if an applicant meets all requirements for Induction Pathway 1 except for employment, he/she will be issued a Certificate of Eligibility which may be converted to an Educator Certificate upon employment.

Pathway 1 for Applicant with completed GaPSC-approved TEP
Requirements:
1. Documentation of TEP completion submitted electronically to the GaPSC by the TEP provider.
2. Passing score on the GACE Program Admission Assessment, or exemption transmitted electronically to the GaPSC.
Please note: Exemptions must be documented by an official transcript reflecting an advanced degree or a copy of an official score report for an eligible exam.
3. Induction level or higher passing score on the appropriate GACE content assessment. Scores are transmitted electronically to the GaPSC.
4. A passing score on the Georgia Educator Ethics Assessment is required. Scores are transmitted electronically to the GaPSC.
5. As of September 1, 2015, a passing score on edTPA, the GaPSC-approved content pedagogy assessment is required. An official score report must be submitted with the application package.
6. Completion of a course in identifying and educating exceptional children. An official transcript must be submitted with the application package.

Please note: The ACTFL Greek (Classical) exam is not accepted for licensure.

American Sign Language (GACE)

Swahili: Currently the ACTFL WPT is not available for Swahili. The ACTFL OPI will meet content assessment requirements for Swahili.

Certification Fees:
Applicants must pay a $20 fee for all certification transactions, with the following exceptions:
1. An applicant employed by a Georgia local unit of administration (LUA) shall be exempt from the $20 fee for the following transactions:
(i) Initial certification (first Georgia certificate);
(ii) Upgrading to a higher-level certificate (based on the awarding of a higher degree) when the applicant holds a Georgia certificate;
(iii) Adding a field to a certificate;
(iv) Renewal of any certificate;
(v) Conversion from any Non-Renewable certificate to a renewable certificate; and
(vi) Moving from one certification tier to another.

2. An applicant for initial certification (first Georgia certificate or Initial Certificate of Eligibility) who graduated from a GaPSC-approved TEP shall be exempt from the $20 fee.

3. No fee is required for changing the legal name on a certificate.
