The Initial Certificate allows applicants to teach in the appropriate recommended subjects. This certificate may be awarded through a teacher education program, the Interim Certificate or a non-traditional route.

Minimum Academic Background
In most states, teachers must have a minimum academic background for certification.
The following is required for this route:
BA Degree + Completed State Approved Teacher Education Program

All preparation programs must meet CAEP Standards in order to be considered an approved program.

As of 2016, No Basic Skills Exams Required

Content Language and English Language Proficiency
In most states, teachers are required to submit evidence of content language proficiency and English language proficiency through coursework, exams, or degree evaluations.

Content Language Proficiency:

Exam(s): Exams are language specific.

Course needed: 20 semester credit hours to include a minimum of 12 upper division credits taken within the last 10 years; course work must include 2 or more of the following areas: Grammar, Conversation, Composition, Culture, and Literature; and
course work in Foreign Language Methods. This may be accepted in lieu of exam(s).

Applicants may take either Praxis II World Languages or ACTFL OPI exam

All adults working in Idaho public schools (certificated and non-certificated), or applying for certification, are currently required to have the results of a background investigation check on file with the State Department of Education.

Please send an email to [email protected] with your mailing address to obtain an Idaho State Department of Education fingerprint card, or visit us at 650 W. State St, Second Floor, Monday – Friday, 8:00am – 5:00pm to pick one up. You must fingerprint on an Idaho SDE fingerprint card.
