Teacher Preparation
In most states, teachers are required to complete training in education methods through a teacher program.

Course needed: Harassment, Bullying and Discrimination Prevention and Intervention.
Exam(s): edTPA is language specific.

Content Language and English Language Proficiency
In most states, teachers are required to submit evidence of content language proficiency and English language proficiency through coursework, exams, or degree evaluations.

Notes:

The requirements for classroom teachers are:
– Submit an application
– Less than 3 years of full-time teaching experience
– Complete 75 hours of professional development within the year prior to applying
– Re-take and pass NYS Teacher Certification Examination, Content Specialty Test(s) in the area(s) required for the certificate sought, within 1 year of applying for the reissuance of your Initial certificate

$50 further application fee required if applying through alternative pathway (or Individual Evaluation)

Individual fingerprint cards are available at local school district, charter school, Boards of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES), colleges with teacher preparation programs or by sending a request to the Office of School Personnel Review and Accountability (OSPRA).

Transcripts not required if applying through a NYS Approved Teacher Preparation Program pathway.

International records, valid credentials and transcripts should be directly sent to the New York State Office of Teaching Initiatives (OTI)
Initial classroom teacher certificate, if expired, may be reissued once, for 5 years and ONLY if the applicant does not already have 3 years of teaching experience or its equivalent for a classroom teaching certificate. College Level Examination Program (CLEP) foreign language examination or a New York University Proficiency examination is considered a duplication of the ACTFL exam.
