Initial Certification requires verification from an accredited university that the candidate has completed an approved education program.

5-year certificate requirements
– Completion of a teacher preparation program
– Completion of 6 credits within the past 5 years
– Completion of Praxis II tests

One year option available if any of the above are missing.

Minimum Academic Background
In most states, teachers must have a minimum academic background for certification.
The following is required for this route:
BA Degree + 18 Hours
BA Degree + Completed State Approved Teacher Education Program

GPA: 2.5

Prior Certification: Must NOT have Current (STATE) Certification

In most states, teachers are required to submit evidence of content language proficiency and English language proficiency through coursework, exams, or degree evaluations.

Notes:
Norwegian and other languages are available for certification through the university coursework route.

PLT exam or 18 credit hours of coursework and student teaching required.

Teaching experience in the content language may substitute up to 3 credit hours of coursework.
*1 year of content language testing substitutes 1 credit hour of coursework.

Applying to the State
In most states, teachers must apply to the state Individually or through their local School District, or Teacher Program Institution. Requirements for the application are outlined below:

Renewal: Renewable
Renewal fee – $36.00 for a 5 year certificate.

Teachers missing requirements may renew for 1 year. Only 1 renewal of a 1 year certificate is permitted.

A one-time 10-year certificate may be issued to an applicant who completes an advanced degree.

Notes:
Fee for 1 year certificate: $18.
No fingerprint/background check required until hired by school district.

Applicants must complete a conduct review statement.
