Minimum Academic Background

Basic Skills
In most states, teachers must verify basic skills in English (Reading and Writing) and Mathematics through coursework, exams, or degree evaluations.

Notes
Applicants who meet one or more of the following criteria may be exempt from the Praxis Core:

Notes:
Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Russian, and Spanish applicants may take the ACTFL OPI, WPT.

There is no Praxis for ASL: An applicant who holds valid certification through the American Sign Language Teaching Association or valid National Interpreter Certification through the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf is not required to satisfy the Sign Language Proficiency Inventory: ASL or the American Sign Language Proficiency Interview (Gallaudet University) requirement.

WVBE will examine transcripts/experience for completion of content language with no assigned Praxis test.

Renewal: Renewable
Use Form 4 to apply for renewal located at http://wvde.state.wv.us/certification/forms/

May be renewed using one of three different options:
1) 6 semester hours of coursework reflecting a 3.0 GPA. 3 semester hours of coursework related to the public school program AND 3 semester hours of coursework related to the improvement of instruction through the use of technology;
2) The certificate being renewed reflects an advanced salary classification of MA +30 of higher;
3) The applicant has reached age 60 (photocopy of birth certificate must be included).

First time applicants must complete a background check. Use Form 7.

International applicants must have transcripts evaluated by a credential service such as:
