Minimum Academic Background
In most states, teachers must have a minimum academic background for certification.
The following is required for this route:
BA Degree + Completed State Approved Teacher Education Program

Basic Skills
In most states, teachers must verify basic skills in English (Reading and Writing) and Mathematics through coursework, exams, or degree evaluations.

Praxis Core test scores for another state will be recognized by Nebraska if the scores meet Nebraska’s score requirements.

Teacher Preparation
In most states, teachers are required to complete training in education methods through a teacher program.

In most states, teachers are required to submit evidence of content language proficiency and English language proficiency through coursework, exams, or degree evaluations.

Notes:
State may review transcripts to determine content language proficiency.

Applicants must have completed 30 credit hours of coursework in the Content Language.

ACTFL OPI and WPT
Passing Score: Advanced-Low: French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, and/or Spanish

Passing Score: Intermediate-High level for Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, and/or Korean

Praxis note: If candidates take tests outside of Nebraska, candidates MUST list
the ‘Nebraska Department of Education’ (State Code 7643) as a ‘Score Recipient’ during the
Praxis registration process in order for NDE to receive the individual candidate’s scores.

Applicants may submit a transcript with Special Education and/or Human Relations coursework to be considered in lieu of course. Applicants may write a narrative describing professional experiences that have led to expertise in the areas of Special Education and/or Human Relations.

Notes:
Fingerprinting for applicants who have not lived in Nebraska continuously for the last 5 years.
Must meet the Recency requirement in one of the following two ways:
Must have taught one full year during the last 5 years or must have completed 6 credit hours in coursework related to education or content language in the last 5 years.

Applicants may submit a transcript with Human Relations coursework to be considered in lieu of this course.

Applicants may write a narrative describing professional experiences that have led to expertise in the 6 areas of Human Relations.

Fingerprints may be taken at any law enforcement office with LiveScan technology. Fee will be waived.

GENERAL NOTES FOR THIS ROUTE
Sept. 2016 Note: Nebraska no longer has reciprocity with other states. Teachers who hold a teaching certificate from another state may apply for an Alternative Program Teaching Permit.

Nebraska does not recognize certificates or endorsements which have been granted by testing only and/or through alternative preparation programs.
