International Visiting Teachers Program (SC)

Description
The South Carolina Department of Education (SCDE) is designated as a sponsor of an Exchange Visitor Program by the United States Department of State. Through this designation, the SCDE is able to sponsor teachers from other countries to teach in South Carolina in the International Visiting Teachers Program.

There are currently Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) agreements with China and India.

Teachers are certified under the International certificate, a short term certificate for teachers participating in J-1 programs.

Content Language and English Language Proficiency
In most states, teachers are required to submit evidence of content language proficiency and English language proficiency through coursework, exams, or degree evaluations.

English Language Proficiency: Oral, Written, Program sponsors are required to evaluate the qualifications of their teacher applicants to ensure that their country’s certification criteria are met and that they are proficient in the English language.

Notes:

The International Certificate is renewable on a year to year basis for a maximum of three years.

Educators who choose to stay in the United States after 3 years who attain H1-B visa status and seek employment in the South Carolina public schools must meet all requirements as specified by the Office of Educator Licensure for the Professional Certificate.
