The Lakota Dakota Nakota Certificate is an initial certificate to teach Lakota, Dakota and/or Nakota.
Non-citizens who are legally permitted to remain in the country are not required to sign the oath of allegiance on the application, but must submit a copy of his/her green card or visa.

Course needed: At least a 3-semester hour methodology course directly related to teaching Lakota, Dakota, or Nakota language..

The teacher program must certify that the applicant has demonstrated proficiency in the Native American Language authorization in oral and written skills and has knowledge of and experience in the culture and history of the Lakota, Dakota, or Nakota.

Official transcript are required to verify the Lakota language methods course.

No state test is required or available to validate this endorsement.

Processing time is estimated.

Applicants must complete sections on the application, including the Applicant Conduct Review Statement. Then they must must mail the fee and application to the university where they completed the language authorization
program and request that the program complete the university statement sections.
Applicants must include the $36 fee in the form of money order, or cashier’s or personal check. It is nonrefundable and payable to the South Dakota Department of Education.

The program will apply on behalf of the applicant.
All persons hired by a school district (either directly or by contract/agreement) shall submit to a criminal background check investigation by means of fingerprint checks by the Division of Criminal Investigation and Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Certificates will not be issued to anyone in child support arrears according to SDCL 25-7A-56.
