Preliminary Single Subject Credential (CA)

Description
The Single Subject Teaching Credential authorizes the applicant to teach the specific subject(s) named on the credential in departmentalized classes, such as those in most middle schools and high schools, in grades preschool, K–12, or in classes organized primarily for adults.

Minimum Academic Background
In most states, teachers must have a minimum academic background for certification.

Basic Skills
In most states, teachers must verify basic skills in English (Reading and Writing) and Mathematics through coursework, exams, or degree evaluations.

Exam(s): One exam is required. SAT, ACT and AP exams are also accepted. See Notes.

Notes
Out of State/Country Certified Applicants seeking equivalency: previous credential does not need to be valid at time of submission.

If credential is in a subject area that does not correspond with an area listed on a California credential, applicant must have completed 32 semester units of course work in the California subject area.

Basic Skills Requirement:
The SAT, ACT, AP Language/Literature, AP Statistics, AP Calculus (I, II) are accepted.

Teacher Preparation
In most states, teachers are required to complete training in education methods through a teacher program.

United States Constitution:

Course needed: 2 semester units or 3 quarter units

Reading:

Course needed: The systematic study of phonemic awareness, phonics, and decoding; literature, language and comprehension; and diagnostic and early intervention techniques.

Technology:

Exam(s): Course or Exam accepted.

A course that includes general and specialized skills in the use of computers in educational settings.

Notes:
CA will accept the ACTFL OPI, WPT for language exams not offered by the CSET.

State may review transcripts to determine content language proficiency.

Induction program (BTSA) is required to progress to next stage.

Out of State/Country Applicants seeking equivalency: US Constitution/Reading NOT Required.

US Constitution may be satisfied through a regionally accredited university US Constitution Exam.

Renewal: Renewable
Individuals who were issued a Preliminary SB 2042 Single Subject Teaching Credential with the renewal code R14I must complete a Commission-approved professional teacher induction program in order to obtain the clear teaching credential, unless the employing agency determines that an induction program is unavailable to the credential candidate. Under these circumstances, the applicant may complete a Commission-approved SB 2042 fifth year program.

An extension of the Preliminary Single Subject Credential may be granted in special circumstances. This is an appeal process:

Individuals who were issued a Preliminary SB 2042 Single Subject Teaching Credential with the renewal code R14S have the option of either completing a Commission-approved professional teacher induction program or a Beginning Teacher Support and Assessment (BTSA) program in order to obtain the clear teaching credential. Those completing a BTSA program must have been enrolled in that program prior to January 1, 2004.
