Description
An educator must be enrolled in an approved Texas EPP to obtain a probationary certificate. The educator must contact their EPP to determine their eligibility for a probationary certificate.

Minimum Academic Background
In most states, teachers must have a minimum academic background for certification.
The following is required for this route:
BA Degree + Enrolled in State Approved Teacher Education Program

Prior Certification: Must NOT have Current (STATE) Certification

Notes
Some educator preparation programs may require proof of competency in reading, writing and mathematics through the THEA/TASP, ACT, SAT or TSI Assessment.

As of 2016, No Basic Skills Exams Required

English Language Proficiency Options
Candidates may complete any of the following:

(A) an undergraduate or graduate degree at an accredited institution of higher education in the United States

(B) if an undergraduate or graduate degree was earned at an institution of higher education outside of the United States, evidence must be provided under procedures approved by the Texas Education Agency (TEA) staff that the primary language of instruction was English

(C) verification of satisfactory scores on an English language proficiency exam, approved by the State Board for Educator Certification. TOEFL-iBT Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing is an example of such an exam.

Renewal: Renewable
A probationary certificate issued to an individual enrolled in a post-baccalaureate or alternative certification program for initial certification. May be extended for no more than two additional 12-month terms following the expiration of the initial term.

After successful completion of all Educator Preparation program requirements, at least one year full-time teaching on the probationary certificate, and exams, candidates may apply for the Standard Certificate.

Additional Fees: Fingerprinting and Criminal History Review = $45
First Aid/CPR: A school district shall make available annually to district employees and volunteers CPR and AED use instruction.

After successful completion of all Educator Preparation program requirements, at least one year full-time teaching on the probationary certificate, and exams, candidates may apply for the Standard Certificate.

GENERAL NOTES FOR THIS ROUTE
Individuals enrolled in a teacher program may apply for a Probationary Certificate to be eligible for employment with a school to complete the required internship. Upon completion of all requirements, two semesters employment by a school on a probationary certificate and all required testing (PPR and content), the individual may apply for the standard certificate.
