In-state applicants must first apply for a Provisional Educator Certificate.

Minimum Academic Background
In most states, teachers must have a minimum academic background for certification.
The following is required for this route:
BA Degree + Completed State Approved Teacher Education Program
BA Degree + 18 Units for MA
BA Degree + MA Degree

Prior Certification: Valid certification from another state

-BA + Completion of teacher program AND
-18 semester credit hours in an approved out of state Master’s program OR
-BA + Completion of teacher program + MA or other higher degree.

As of 2016, No Basic Skills Exams Required

Out of state teacher programs should have assessed Oral Language Proficiency.

Alternative route teacher certification programs completed in other states require a signed copy of the alternative route program and a copy of a valid out of state standard teaching certificate issued based on completion of the alternative program.

Renewal requires a combination of the below:
– 6 Semester hours in an approved EPI OR
– 6 semester credit hours of academic credit at any regionally accredited college or university AND/OR
– 150 State Continuing Education Clock Hours (SCECHs) AND/OR
– 150 District Provided Professional Development (DPPD) clock hours

Out of state applicants must submit all documents on time in one package.
