A Professional Educator Certificate may be continued with verification of one of the following options:
1. Three full years of full-time educational experience and fifty clock hours of allowable professional development.
2. Three full years of full-time educational experience and three semester hours of allowable credit.
3. Fifty clock hours of allowable professional development and three semester hours of allowable credit.
4. Six semester hours of allowable credit.
5. Certification from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) earned during the valid period of the Professional Educator Certificate currently held.

GENERAL NOTES FOR THIS ROUTE
A Professional Educator Certificate may be issued at the Class B, Class A, or Class AA level. Application for the Professional Educator Certificate is made by the applicant, in conjunction with the Alabama college/university, upon completion of all requirements of the State-Approved Program.

State-approved Class B Programs for Teaching Fields lead to an initial Professional Educator Certificate on the bachelor’s degree level. State-approved Class A Programs for Teaching Fields lead to a Class A Professional Educator Certificate on the master’s degree level. State-approved Class AA Programs for Teaching Fields lead to a Class AA Professional Educator Certificate on the sixth-year level. Some institutions require program completers to earn an education specialist degree.
