Notes
An out-of-state certificate and experience will satisfy the specialization and professional preparation requirements for issuance of a Professional Class I or Class II certificate, if the applicant holds a valid standard certificate, issued by a state with which the Virgin Islands Board of Education has signed an Interstate Agreement in a covered area that is comparable to a Virgin Islands coverage area.

Graduates of approved teacher education programs within the last five (5) years under the Interstate Certification Compact (ICC) must submit a copy of their certificate and, if applicable, a successful professional experience statement. Graduates of these approved programs, who are seeking a teaching position as secondary educators must have also taken the PRAXIS II Subject Assessments and Specialty Area Test.

Student Teaching
Course needed: 26 semester hours of professional education including Foundations of Education, Educational Psychology, Curriculum and Methods (Minimum 8 Semester Credit Hours in Content Language), Educational Technology, Special Ed, and Student Teaching..

Content Language and English Language Proficiency
In most states, teachers are required to submit evidence of content language proficiency and English language proficiency through coursework, exams, or degree evaluations.

Course needed: College major and/or 30 credits for a world language certification, including coursework in elementary, intermediate and advanced grammar and conversation, literature, culture and civilization.

Notes:
Secondary school applicants with less than 30 credits in their Content Language, but more than 15 credits in that area, can take the Praxis II exam in that Content Language to show competency.

Applicants must complete a course in Virgin Islands History within the first year of employment.

Renewal: Renewable
Applicants must request official renewal application form from the U.S. Virgin Islands Department of Education.

Applicants are eligible to upgrade to the Class II Certificate when they have completed a master’s degree or at least 30 semester hours of graduate credit.

Applicants must provide proof of 30 months of successful professional work in the field of education during the past 5 years AND a minimum of 12 semester credit hours beyond a bachelor’s degree in the Content Language or an area directly related to the language.

Applicants must provide a physician’s certificate of good health as part of the application.

GENERAL NOTES FOR THIS ROUTE
The University of the Virgin Islands is the only U.S. Virgin Islands institution that offers undergraduate and graduate level courses to meet certification requirements.
