Professional Teacher Certificate (AK)

Description
The Professional Teacher Certificate is available to those who have teaching experience of 2 years under a valid teaching certificate in Alaska. It authorizes the holder to teach the specific subjects listed on the document.

Alaska is a NASDTEC member, however all out of state applications will be carefully reviewed. Additional courses/documentation may be required.

Alaska does not accept transcript analysis or testing to meet teacher program requirements.

Prior Certification: Must Hold Current (STATE) Certification

Basic Skills
In most states, teachers must verify basic skills in English (Reading and Writing) and Mathematics through coursework, exams, or degree evaluations.

Georgia Assessments for the Certification of Educators,
Illinois Certification Testing System,
Michigan Test for Teacher Certification,
New Mexico Assessment of Teacher Basic Skills,
New York State Teacher Certification Liberal Arts and Science Test,
Oklahoma General Test

Applicants missing Praxis I PPST who hold a current and valid out of state teaching certificate (US only), may qualify for a 1-year Initial Teaching Certificate.

In most states, teachers are required to complete training in education methods through a teacher program.

In most states, teachers are required to submit evidence of content language proficiency and English language proficiency through coursework, exams, or degree evaluations.

Alaska does not accept transcript analysis or testing to meet teacher program requirements.

Completion of a teacher preparation program as verified by an Institutional Recommendation AND transcripts, or a State Recommendation.

Praxis II required for French, German, Spanish.

ACTFL For Chinese, Japanese, and Russian only.

ACTFL OPI Passing Score:

ACTFL WPT Passing Score:
— Advanced Mid or Higher

If all requirements for a Professional certificate with the exception of the 2 year of teaching experience and the content area exam have been met, an applicant may apply for a Second Initial certificate.

In most states, teachers must apply to the state Individually or through their local School District, or Teacher Program Institution. Requirements for the application are outlined below:

Background Check
Required

Renewal: Renewable
Renewal credit (6 semester hours of credit taken during the life of the certificate being renewed. A minimum of 3 semester hours must be upper division or graduate credit.)

Verification of current employment in an Alaska public school district in a position requiring a certificate. If an applicant is not employed in this capacity at the time of renewal, a fingerprint card will be required.

Notes:
Official transcripts must show:
3 semester hours of approved Alaska studies Coursework.
3 semester hours of approved Alaska multicultural coursework
6 semester hours of coursework completed in the five years prior to application (recency credit)
