Minimum Academic Background
In most states, teachers must have a minimum academic background for certification.

BA Degree + Enrolled in State Approved Teacher Education Program

Prior Certification: Must NOT have Current (STATE) Certification

Basic Skills

Teacher Preparation
In most states, teachers are required to complete training in education methods through a teacher program.

State Approved Teacher Education Program
Course needed: 15 basic education credits, including the philosophical, sociological and psychological foundations of education..
2 years teaching in the subject area at a public or private school in lieu of student teaching
Exam(s):

Content Language and English Language Proficiency
In most states, teachers are required to submit evidence of content language proficiency and English language proficiency through coursework, exams, or degree evaluations.

Course needed: 21 undergraduate or 18 graduate credits OR master’s or doctorate degree in the subject to be taught, including teaching methodology.

Additional Requirements for this route include the following:
Special Education:

Course needed: Have passed a course on the Nature of the Exceptional Child, including the concepts of Assistive Technology and Inclusion.

Technology:

Contingent upon Transcript Evaluation
Have passed a course on the Integration of Technology in Education, including the issue of identifying reliable sources of information and adapting the curriculum.

Notes:

Successful completion of a Puerto Rico history course and a course of American history .
