Description
This license is for teachers who have completed a teacher preparation program and meet basic skills and content knowledge requirements but do not hold a license in any state. This is the initial license issued to all educators who have less than three years of contracted, full time teaching experience.

Minimum Academic Background

Basic Skills
In most states, teachers must verify basic skills in English (Reading and Writing) and Mathematics through coursework, exams, or degree evaluations.

Praxis Core, SAT, ACT, or BA (Awarded by a regionally accredited institution of higher education: submit an official transcript from a regionally accredited institution showing you graduated with a bachelor’s degree)

In most states, teachers are required to submit evidence of content language proficiency and English language proficiency through coursework, exams, or degree evaluations.

Notes:
Any of these options may be used in lieu of a content or subject assessment in the language:
National Board for Professional Teaching Standards certification in the content field;
OR
Content major consisting of a minimum of 30 semester hours in the language for a bachelor’s degree awarded by a regionally accredited institution of higher education;
OR
A minimum of 30 semester hours in the language from a regionally accredited institution of higher education, at least fifteen of which must be upper division level;
OR
A master’s, specialist or doctoral degree in the language awarded by a regionally accredited institution of higher education.
