The Regular I License is available to those who are currently employed as a teacher in a DC local education agency.

Minimum Academic Background
In most states, teachers must have a minimum academic background for certification.

In most states, teachers must verify basic skills in English (Reading and Writing) and Mathematics through coursework, exams, or degree evaluations.

Basic Skills may also be met by meeting an equivalency score determined by the State Superintendent of Education on the SAT, ACT or GRE.

SAT, ACT, and GRE and Praxis I scores are accepted until 8/2016.

Teacher Preparation
In most states, teachers are required to complete training in education methods through a teacher program.

Notes:
Teacher program must be approved by the DC OSSE.

World Languages with no adopted Content Language exams (K-12) will take the Praxis World Languages Pedagogy exam. Contact OSSE for additional available language certifications.

Applicants who hold a Regular I Teaching Credential shall receive an upgrade to a 2-year Regular II Teaching Credential upon successful completion of a state-approved preparation TEP in which he or she was enrolled and where applicable, the Praxis II, Pedagogy examination (Praxis World Languages Pedagogy), or other nationally recognized test as may be designated by the State Superintendent of Education, with a qualifying score determined by the State Superintendent of Education.

Applicants must be employed by a local education agency in the District of Columbia.

Applicants who are enrolled in or completed a state-approved teacher program at an institution/agency located outside of the District of Columbia must submit the following forms:

1) Application for Regular I Licensure
2) Approved Program Verification Form
3) Educational Employment Verification Form
4) Procedures to obtain nationwide criminal history report (for DCPS employees only)
