Description
A school district or nonpublic school may employ a non-certificated, non-endorsed, teacher for grades 9 to 12 in world languages, or other subjects, as approved by the superintendent of public instruction.

Minimum Academic Background
In most states, teachers must have a minimum academic background for certification.
The following is required for this route:
BA Degree + Major in Content Language
BA Degree + Enrolled in State Approved Teacher Education Program

Prior Certification: Must NOT have Current (STATE) Certification

Basic Skills
In most states, teachers must verify basic skills in English (Reading and Writing) and Mathematics through coursework, exams, or degree evaluations.

Applicant must provide verification of enrollment in an approved teacher program.

Out-of-state applicants who do not have 3 years teaching experience and have not completed 18 post BA semester hours must take Professional Readiness Exam (PRE), and content area MTTC tests.

Renewal: Renewable
To Renew: Must be continually enrolled in TEP and completing credit toward appropriate certification. Has passed both the basic skills and subject area examinations (if a subject area examination exists) in the field of specialization in which he or she will be teaching.

GENERAL NOTES FOR THIS ROUTE
Student teaching component is absolutely necessary to teach in Michigan. If international teaching credential is missing this component one will be advised to complete TEP in Michigan.

Induction programs may be required for employment in different school districts. Individuals must confirm with district for specific requirements, fees, and timeline to completion.

The employing school district or nonpublic school shall verify that the person is assigned a mentor teacher with experience and expertise in the subject or specialty area that the permit is being issued under section 1233b.
