Sojourn Certificated Employee Credential (CA)

Description
The Sojourn Certificated Employee Credential authorizes the applicant to provide bilingual instruction, world language instruction, or cultural enrichment in the elementary and/or secondary grades of the employing California public school district in the subjects the applicant is academically competent to teach.

Four years of successful classroom teaching (at a regionally accredited school) on the basis of a Sojourn Certificated Employee Credential, as demonstrated by continual employment in the public schools, shall be accepted as equivalent to the professional preparation program requirement needed to obtain the Preliminary or Clear Multiple or Single Subject Teaching Credential.
Credential Valid for 2 Years
Verification must be submitted by the district the applicant was employed as a teacher during the calendar year immediately preceding the date of application.

Notes
A OYNR or One Year Non-Renewable credential is available to those who do not complete the Basic Skills Requirement.

Content Language and English Language Proficiency
In most states, teachers are required to submit evidence of content language proficiency and English language proficiency through coursework, exams, or degree evaluations.

Course needed: 3 year or higher degree from foreign institution in which all instruction was in content language

Notes:
CA will accept the ACTFL OPI, WPT for language exams not offered by the CSET.

State may review transcripts to determine content language proficiency.

Renewal: Renewable
Each year the applicant must renew this credential. Applicants must provide evidence of 12 units earned toward a Preliminary Single Subject Credential, and a Statement from their employing agency verifying a continued need.

Four years of successful classroom teaching on the basis of a Sojourn Certificated Employee Credential, as demonstrated by continual employment in the public schools, shall be accepted as equivalent to the professional
preparation program requirement needed to obtain the Preliminary Single Subject Teaching Credential.

1. A completed BA (Foreign Transcripts must be evaluated)
2. Four consecutive years teaching under the Sojourn Credential in lieu of a Teacher Education Program.
3. Basic Skills Requirement:
The SAT, ACT, AP Language/Literature, AP Statistics, AP Calculus (I, II) are accepted.
4. Reading Requirement:
— Course – Developing English Language Skills, including Reading, that is research-based and includes the study of phonemic awareness, spelling patterns, early intervention techniques, ongoing diagnostic techniques, and a strong literature, language, and comprehension component. Submit a copy of the course description for evaluation purposes.
5. US Constitution Requirement:
— Course – (at least two semester units or three quarter units) in the provisions and principles of the United States Constitution at a regionally accredited college or university. Submit a copy of the course description for evaluation purposes.
— Exam: Provisions and principles of the U.S. Constitution given by a regionally- accredited college or university
6. Subject Matter Competence Requirement:
— CSET: (Content Language) OR (ACTFL Accepted)
— Complete a California Commission approved program.
7. Technology Requirement:
— Coursework: Foundational computer technology course work that includes general and specialized skills in the use of computers in educational settings OR
— CSET: Preliminary Educational Technology
