Standard Certificate (TX)

This is the initial certificate for in state applicants. Out-of-state/country applicants may apply for a One-Year Certificate if they do not meet all of Texas state testing requirements.

Minimum Academic Background
In most states, teachers must have a minimum academic background for certification.
The following is required for this route:
BA Degree + Completed State Approved Teacher Education Program

Some educator preparation programs may require proof of competency in reading, writing and mathematics through the THEA/TASP, ACT, SAT or TSI Assessment.

As of 2016, No Basic Skills Exams Required

**NOTE on Bilingual Requirements – individuals wishing to teach in language immersion schools must complete a general certification program for EC-4 or EC-6 or 4-8 Generalist + Bilingual Education

English Language Proficiency Options
Candidates may complete any of the following:

(A) an undergraduate or graduate degree at an accredited institution of higher education in the United States

(B) if an undergraduate or graduate degree was earned at an institution of higher education outside of the United States, evidence must be provided under procedures approved by the Texas Education Agency (TEA) staff that the primary language of instruction was English

(C) verification of satisfactory scores on an English language proficiency exam, approved by the State Board for Educator Certification. TOEFL-iBT Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing is an example of such an exam.

150 clock-hours of CPE every five years.

TEA will notify applicant if fingerprinting is required. If fingerprints are required, the certificate will not be issued until fingerprinting is complete.

Additional Fees: Fingerprinting and Criminal History Review = $45
First Aid/CPR: A school district shall make available annually to district employees and volunteers CPR and AED use instruction.
