Minimum Academic Background
In most states, teachers must have a minimum academic background for certification.

Basic Skills

The Standard Professional I Certificate shall be renewed only once upon the request of the local superintendent of schools for an applicant whose service was interrupted during the validity period of the Standard Professional I Certificate, preventing the applicant from meeting the experience requirement, if the applicant presents 6 semester hours of acceptable credit.

Acceptable credit is credit that is:

* Earned or taught at a regionally accredited college/university or through Continuing Professional Development (CPD) credits;

* Related to a school assignment;

* Earned within 5 years immediately preceding the date on which the new certificate is issued; and

* Earned in reading course work if not already completed (teaching areas only).

Prior to the expiration of the SPC1 and in order to obtain the SPC2, you must:

1) Complete a minimum of 6 semester hours of acceptable credits including any required reading course work
2) Complete and verify 3 years of full-time satisfactory professional school-related experience

GENERAL NOTES FOR THIS ROUTE
This is Maryland’s first-level professional certificate. It can be issued to a teacher who meets all certification requirements and is employed in a Maryland local school system. This certificate is valid for five years and renewable only once.
