Description
The Temporary Authorization Route is for applicants who do not currently hold a Missouri teaching certificate.

Notes
An applicant with a BA in the content language can take self directed courses, teach for 2 years and is mentored by a school district.

The temporary authorization certificate will not include elementary (1-6); early childhood (B-3); early childhood special education (B-3); blind and partially sighted (K-12); and/or deaf and hearing impaired (K-12) areas. Applicants for the areas of driver’s education, English for speakers of other languages, gifted, and special reading must already hold a certificate of license to teach or must seek a certificate of license to teach in a stand-alone area.

GRADES Kad12: Thirty (30) semester hours in the Foreign Language to be taught, or (27) semester hours plus two (2) or more earned units of high school credit in that language.
GRADES Kad9*: Twentyad-one (21) semester hours in the Foreign Language to be taught, or eighteen (18) semester hours plus two (2) or more earned units of high school credit in that language.

In addition to an understanding and appreciation of the foreign culture and civilization, the prospective teacher will demonstrate, to the satisfaction of the degree granting institution, proficiency in the areas of listening comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing.

*Teachers must be certificated in another elementary, middle school, or secondary teaching field.

Upon completion of all program requirements and a minimum of 2 years teaching, the candidate applies for the 4-year Initial Certificate.

GENERAL NOTES FOR THIS ROUTE
An individual with a bachelor’s degree in a content area (such as Mathematics or English) takes self-directed courses – a maximum of 24 college credits (varies for different areas) to meet specified competencies, teaches for two years, is mentored by the school district and passes at least two exit examinations. The individual works under a one-year, renewable certificate that requires 9 semester hours of college credit each year in order to be renewed. When requirements are completed, the individual receives an initial certificate.
