Description
Alternative Certification Elementary and Secondary (ACES) Program is a certification only district-based program. This 18-month program requires a commitment to the certification process and a 3-year commitment to teaching in Jefferson County Public Schools. This route is for individuals interested in certification in the following areas: Elementary Education, Math (Middle and High), Science (Middle and High), and dual certification (Middle and High).

Minimum Academic Background

Basic Skills
In most states, teachers must verify basic skills in English (Reading and Writing) and Mathematics through coursework, exams, or degree evaluations.

Notes:
During both the fall and spring semesters of teaching employment, participants will be required to attend seminars, observe experienced teachers, complete classroom assignments, conduct action research, and complete other related projects as part of their training.

Renewal: Nonrenewable
Upon confirmation of employment in an assignment for the grade level and specialization identified on a valid statement of eligibility, a Provisional Teaching Certificate shall be issued for the duration of the beginning teacher internship. Upon successful completion of the internship, a Professional Teaching Certificate shall be issued, valid for a four (4) year period.

An applicant applying for initial certification in Kentucky will need to submit a Kentucky state ($20) and federal ($18) background check.

GENERAL NOTES FOR THIS ROUTE
Option 2 – Local District Training Program Certification

For Teaching Grades P-12

Applicants qualify for this route if they:

Have a bachelor’s degree with a 2.75 GPA (exceptional experience may be substituted for GPA requirement);
Have passed required written assessments in the specialty area;
Have completed a 30-hour course of study in the specialty area or have five years of exceptional field experience related to the certification area being sought;
Have an offer of employment from a school district that has an approved training program.*

Additional Information: After successfully meeting the requirements of the one-year training program, the candidate receives a one-year Provisional Certificate and participates in KTIP (Kentucky Teacher Internship Program – http://www.kyepsb.net/internships/index.asp).

Upon successful completion of the internship program, he/she receives the Professional Certificate.
