Minimum Academic Background
In most states, teachers must have a minimum academic background for certification.

BA Degree + Major in Content Language

Basic Skills
In most states, teachers must verify basic skills in English (Reading and Writing) and Mathematics through coursework, exams, or degree evaluations.

Candidates who have professional degrees are exempt from the GRE requirement.

Teacher Preparation
In most states, teachers are required to complete training in education methods through a teacher program.
The following is required for this route:
State Approved Teacher Education Program
180-hour (middle to high school teachers) or 240-hour (elementary teachers) institute to be completed prior to receiving the temporary provisional certificate or during the first year of the certificate.

Subsequent Renewals: Satisfactory progress towards the program requirements. Enrollment in the Kentucky Teacher Internship Program (KTIP). Candidate may reapply for third Temporary Provisional Certificate if needed.
