Description
The Transitional C Certificate is issued to permit the employment of an individual as a classroom teacher in a New York State public school; the individual must be enrolled in a New York State Transitional C program.
Certificate Valid for 3 years
Must be enrolled in a NYS Registered Alternative Graduate Program

Applicants can earn up to 30 semester hours of credit toward subject competence by passing the both ACTFL OPI and WPT. Passing scores range from Intermediate High to Advanced Low. See http://www.highered.nysed.gov/tcert/actfl.html

Child Abuse Detection requirement fulfilled by completing 6 hours of coursework or training in Harassment, Bullying and Discrimination Prevention and Intervention.

Individual fingerprint cards are available at your local school district, charter school, Boards of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES), colleges with teacher preparation programs or by sending a request to the Office of School Personnel Review and Accountability (OSPRA).

International records, valid credentials and transcripts should be directly sent to the New York State Office of Teaching Initiatives (OTI)
Valid for 3 years while the applicant is enrolled in an alternative program. Leads to Professional License upon completion of Professional license requirements.

College Level Examination Program (CLEP) foreign language examination or a New York University Proficiency examination is considered a duplication of the ACTFL exam. Also, tests taken for certification must not duplicate courses completed for college credit. Institutions of Higher Education may offer teacher education programs tailored to the needs of career changers and others holding appropriate graduate academic or professional degrees. Based on the higher standards for all teachers, Transitional C programs allow candidates to enter teaching while participating in a college program for pedagogical core study.
