Description
Candidates who have a Bachelor’s degree from a regionally-accredited college/university are eligible to apply for an alternative license (i.e., Transitional License) if they have been offered employment by an approved Tennessee public or non-public school.

Notes
The Transitional license is issued at the request of a superintendent/director of schools for an educator who will be
employed while completing licensure requirements. The license is issued for one school year at a time and may only
be renewed two times for a maximum of three years

Minimum Academic Background
In most states, teachers must have a minimum academic background for certification.
The following is required for this route:
BA Degree + Enrolled in State Approved Teacher Education Program
BA Degree + MA Degree

GPA: 2.75

Prior Certification: Must NOT have Current (STATE) Certification

Teacher Preparation
In most states, teachers are required to complete training in education methods through a teacher program.

Candidates must verify teaching Content Language by one of the following:
1. Completion of an academic major in teaching the Content Language
OR
2. Documentation of at least 24 semester hours in teaching the Content Language
OR
3. Successful completion of Praxis II (Content Language)

Notes:
A Practitioner License is issued at the request of the superintendent/director of a Tennessee school system to an individual who is employed while still completing specific licensure requirements.
All persons wishing to enter approved teacher programs in Tennessee shall be required to submit to a criminal history background check. Contact the teacher program for information and pricing.
To obtain the Professional Teacher License:
1) Verification of completion of professional core by college/university;
2) Successful completion of Praxis II content examination/ACTFL OPI & WPT, and PLT;
3) All transcripts that have not previously been submitted;
4) Verification of minimum of one year successful teaching experience.
