Transitional License (DC)
Description
The Transitional License is for applicants who hold a full valid out-of-state teaching license and has completed an applicable teacher education program and only needs to complete DC’s testing requirements.
License Valid for 1 year
Applicant has never been previously employed as a DC public school teacher

Minimum Academic Background
In most states, teachers must have a minimum academic background for certification.
The following is required for this route:
BA Degree + Major in Content Language
BA Degree + Completed State Approved Teacher Education Program
Prior Certification: Must Hold Out of State Certification
Notes
As of 2016, Basic Skills Exams are not required.

Candidate has completed a degree major in the content area of the teaching assignment OR candidate has verification of completion of a state-approved teacher education program in the applicable subject area
Applying to the State
In most states, teachers must apply to the state Individually or through their local School District, or Teacher Program Institution. Requirements for the application are outlined below:

Applicants with a Transitional License must complete requirements for Regular II or I License including enrolling/completing a teacher education program and all required exams.
Notes:
Applicants not eligible for a Regular I or II license must be hired by a DC LEA/school district or school to be eligible for a Transitional license. Please contact the school district’s personnel office for more information on obtaining a Transitional license.
