Description

The practitioner license is the initial license. It is valid for three years and may be renewed once. Tennessee offers a practitioner license in many endorsement areas, allowing individuals to serve as classroom teachers. At a minimum, candidates interested in the practitioner teacher license must hold a bachelor’s degree from a regionally-accredited college or university AND be enrolled in or have completed an approved educator preparation program, and be recommended for licensure by the program provider. Additionally, testing requirements as specified by the State Board of Education should be met. To advance from a practitioner license to professional license, teachers must successfully complete an approved educator preparation program, submit passing scores on required content and literacy assessments, have three years of experience and have a recommendation from the director of schools or documentation of 30 professional development points (PDPs).
