Alternative Certification Route 4 – Route For Individuals Teaching With Conditional/Emergency Certificates (WA)

Description
Alternative Certification Route 4 is designed for individuals with baccalaureate degrees, who are employed in the district on conditional or emergency substitute certificate at the time of application.

Individuals may serve as the teacher of record while in the alternative route program if employed on conditional certificate

Only available in subject matter shortage areas or shortages due to geographic location. Currently Chinese and Arabic are critical shortages in the Seattle Washington area and qualify for Route 4 Alternative Certification.

Basic Skills
In most states, teachers must verify basic skills in English (Reading and Writing) and Mathematics through coursework, exams, or degree evaluations.

Exam(s): One exam is required. CBEST, NES, Praxis I also accepted. See Notes.

Exam(s): One exam is required. CBEST, NES, Praxis I also accepted. See Notes.

University GPA may be considered in the selection process.

Applicants who have not completed a state approved teacher program may apply for a Residency Certificate if they can verify 3 years of K-12 teaching outside Washington and a regular teaching certificate in another state.

Passing scores on these exams may waive the WEST B:
ACT
SAT
CBEST (California)
NES (Oregon)
Praxis I (PPST) – Reading, Writing, Math

Applicants with National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) certificate are exempt from WEST B.

If completing WEST B, use report code #399 to have a score sent to OSPI. Do not call OSPI or ESD offices for test information.

Teacher Preparation
In most states, teachers are required to complete training in education methods through a teacher program.

Notes:
Cohorts of candidates for Route 4 attend an intensive summer teaching academy, followed by a full year employed by a district in a mentored internship.

If employed on a conditional certificate, the intern may serve as the teacher of record and is considered a Highly Qualified teacher under federal No Child Left Behind (NCLB), while serving as the teacher of record and supported by a well-trained mentor.

Summer Teaching Academies are conducted by Universities and State Approved Alternative Certification Organizations.

Induction of one school year is required to progress to next stage.

Those without a conditional certificate must complete a minimum of 65 clock hour of training in order to renew certificate.

Applicants must e-mail: cert@k12.wa.us with a mailing address for the fingerprint card package.

Cost for background check and finger printing is $43.00
