Basic Skills
In most states, teachers must verify basic skills in English (Reading and Writing) and Mathematics through coursework, exams, or degree evaluations.

Notes
If taking the Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators Tests, Reading (5712); Writing (5722); and Mathematics (5732) is required.

Teacher Preparation
In most states, teachers are required to complete training in education methods through a teacher program.

Notes:
Out of State credential holders with no deficiencies
and 3 years of full-time teaching experience in a public or accredited nonpublic school (K-12) are exempt from the professional teacher’s assessment requirements.

Notes:

VA requires a course by course transcript evaluation of all foreign degrees.

VA requires a statement regarding equivalency of the program of study to the 4-year BA from a regionally accredited college or university. VA may accept the statement instead of a transcript evaluation.

*Please note: Applicant must submit these documents when seeking a job. Upon hiring the individual, the school district/school will submit these documents and a request for a Virginia license to the VA Department of Education office.
