Description
Applicants must be employed under emergency placement in the Virgin Islands or provide proof of former or current employment in a private or parochial school, with a satisfactory or better performance rating.

Minimum Academic Background
In most states, teachers must have a minimum academic background for certification.
The following is required for this route:
BA Degree + Major in Content Language
BA Degree + Enrolled in State Approved Teacher Education Program

Basic Skills
In most states, teachers must verify basic skills in English (Reading and Writing) and Mathematics through coursework, exams, or degree evaluations.

Teacher Preparation
In most states, teachers are required to complete training in education methods through a teacher program.
The following is required for this route:
State Approved Teacher Education Program
Course needed: 20 semester hours of theoretical and practical knowledge in the developmental needs of elementary students, the needs of the exceptional child, methods and materials of instruction in math, language arts, educational technology, classroom management.
A uniquely designed clinical assessment based upon the practice and understanding of equality of educational opportunity and in accordance with other approved guidelines by the University of the Virgin Islands.

Content Language and English Language Proficiency
In most states, teachers are required to submit evidence of content language proficiency and English language proficiency through coursework, exams, or degree evaluations.

Content Language Proficiency:

Course needed: College major and/or 30 credits for a world language certification, including coursework in elementary, intermediate and advanced grammar and conversation, literature, culture and civilization.

Notes:

Applicants must complete a course in Virgin Islands History within the first year of employment.

In most states, teachers must apply to the state Individually or through their local School District, or Teacher Program Institution. Requirements for the application are outlined below:

Renewal: Renewable
Applicants must request official renewal application form from the U.S. Virgin Islands Department of Education.

Applicants are eligible to upgrade to the Class II Certificate when they have completed a master’s degree or at least 30 semester hours of graduate credit.

Applicants must provide a physician’s certificate of good health as part of the application.

GENERAL NOTES FOR THIS ROUTE
The University of the Virgin Islands is the only U.S. Virgin Islands institution that offers undergraduate and graduate level courses to meet certification requirements.
