Minimum Academic Background
In most states, teachers must have a minimum academic background for certification.
The following is required for this route:
BA Degree + MA Degree

The faculty member shall hold either a:
Doctoral degree; or Master’s degree and documented expertise in the specific teaching or administrative assignment.

As of 2016, No Basic Skills Exams Required

Work Experience
In some states, teachers are required to provide evidence of work experience.
The following is required for this route:
5 years of full-time teaching experience or its equivalent (90 semester credit hours) at an accredited institution of higher education in the academic subject for which certification is sought. years.

Content Language and English Language Proficiency
In most states, teachers are required to submit evidence of content language proficiency and English language proficiency through coursework, exams, or degree evaluations.

Background Check

Renewal: Renewable
The provisional certificate for college faculty may be renewed upon recommendation of the local school superintendent and the appropriate college or university unit head for one (1) additional one (1) year period.


An applicant applying for initial certification in Kentucky will need to submit a Kentucky state ($20) and federal ($18) background check.

Option 3 – College Faculty Certification. For Teaching Grades 8-12

An applicant meeting these requirements receives a Statement of Eligibility. After obtaining employment, the teacher receives a one-year Provisional Certificate. Upon successful completion of KTIP during the first year of teaching, the teacher receives the Professional Certificate.

The provisional certificate for college faculty shall be issued for a specific teaching or administrative assignment in a school district for a period not exceeding one (1) year to college faculty on recommendation of the:
(a) Local school district superintendent; and
(b) The head of the faculty member’s unit at the institution of higher education at which the faculty member is employed.
