The Initial License is issued to first-time applicants who have met all of the ND requirements for licensure.

Notes
North Dakota has limited reciprocity with other states. All out-of-state applicants submit transcripts for review by the same criteria as ND applicants. Applicants must meet missing North Dakota requirements within 2 years.

Minimum Academic Background
In most states, teachers must have a minimum academic background for certification.
The following is required for this route:

Basic Skills
In most states, teachers must verify basic skills in English (Reading and Writing) and Mathematics through coursework, exams, or degree evaluations.

Applicants must meet individual qualifying scores in Math, Reading or Writing, or meet qualifying scores on two of the tests and have a composite score above 500.

Teacher Preparation
In most states, teachers are required to complete training in education methods through a teacher program.

Notes:
A minimum of 10 weeks full-time successful participation in student teaching at appropriate grade levels is required for the Initial License.

K-12 preparation programs in world language must include a minimum of four semester hours of special methods of teaching inclusive of K-12 and special methods of teaching in the specific Content Language

Two Year Renewal (Two-Year): Issued to applicants with less than eighteen months of successful contracted teaching in North Dakota, those who have completed all requirements of a Probationary License, or those who have met all the requirements of an Interim-Reciprocal License.

Applicant must complete 4 semester hours of reeducation credits.

If the teacher has taught in North Dakota for 18 months then the teacher will be eligible for a Five (5) Year License.

Notes:
The $44.50 additional fee is for fingerprint processing.
The fingerprinting process can be conducted at a sheriff’s office, a police department, by
campus police, or by an agency authorized to take fingerprints. Two cards must be completed
with a ten-finger check.

The fingerprinting agency may request the ORI, which is ND92011OZ, and Reason
Fingerprinted, which is Teacher Licensure in accordance with NDCC 15.13-14.

North Dakota does require transcript evaluation. No specific agencies mentioned.
