Applying to the State
In most states, teachers must apply to the state Individually or through their local School District, or Teacher Program Institution. Requirements for the application are outlined below:

Renewal: Renewable
First Renewal: Successful progress toward program requirements.

Subsequent Renewals: Successful progress toward program requirements and successfully meets all assessment requirements for certification area and submits scores to EPSB. Enrollment in the Kentucky Teacher Internship Program (KTIP).

Candidate may reapply for third Temporary Provisional Certificate if needed.

Notes:

An applicant applying for initial certification in Kentucky will need to submit a Kentucky state ($20) and federal ($18) background check.

GENERAL NOTES FOR THIS ROUTE
Option 8 – Teach For America (TFA) Alternative Route to Certification

The TFA option is currently approved as a pilot program in Kentucky. TFA, a nationwide non-profit organization focused on closing the achievement gaps among students in low-income areas. TFA hopes to recruit candidates via its screening process and prepare them for teaching in Kentucky. It will allow a person in a field other than education to receive a one-year Temporary Provisional Certificate (elementary, middle, and/or secondary) renewable for a maximum of three years, if he/she has met the following conditions:

–Holds a bachelor’s degree
–Has an offer of employment from a local school district in the area of certification being sought
–Meets the participation criteria for the TFA program
–Successfully completes all training requirements of the TFA program
–Passes all content assessments required by EPSB in the area of certification being sought
