Overview

Educators in the state of Florida must be certified to teach in public schools and in many of private schools. There are direct and an indirect routes to the Professional Teaching Certificate, which is the terminal certification for an educator. Graduates of a traditional teacher preparation program and holders of an out-of-state teaching certificate quality for a direct route and may apply for a professional certificate right away. However, most of the applicants pursuing the nontraditional routes have to first qualify for the Temporary Certification. Even if the candidate has not completed an educator-preparation program, they may qualify for a temporary teaching certificate if they have earned a bachelor’s degree in the content area. The Temporary Certificate is valid for three school years, which allows time to complete the certification tests and other requirements while teaching full time. Upon meeting the required criteria for each specific route, the temporary certificate is advanced to the professional certificate. For additional information about certification, please, consult the Bureau of Educator Certification of the Florida Department of Education
