Overview

The State of Hawaii requires teachers of world languages to hold 1) a valid Hawaii Teachers Standards Board (HTSB) teaching license in the subject area and grade level for the teaching assignment, or 2) a valid Hawaii Qualified Teacher (HQT) certificate by having a valid HTSB License in any subject area for the grade level assigned.

The Every Student Succeeds Act of 2015 requires that teachers of all subjects meet the federal requirement for designation as ESSA Hawaii Qualified.  To meet ESSA Hawaii Qualified Teacher (ESSA HQT) requirements, teachers must:

  1. Hold a valid Hawaii Teachers Standards Board (HTSB) teaching license in the subject area and grade level for the teaching assignment or
  2. Hold a valid Hawaii Qualified Teacher certificate by having a valid HTSB License in any subject area for the grade level assigned and also meets one of the following requirements:
    1. Passed the Praxis Content Exam or other accepted content exam for the subject area and grade level or
    2. Holds a valid National Board Certificate for the subject area or
    3. Earned a College major or 30 credits in the subject area or
    4. Completed an approved ESSA Hawaii Qualified Teacher Rubric in the subject area or
    5. Earned a Hawaii issued Highly Qualified Teacher certificate in the subject area

Programs

This is a list that the state maintains of approved credentialing programs. Use this list to search for credentialing programs that fit your needs. This list displays all credentialing programs (including those that are not specifically for world language teaching). The state may periodically change this list. Credential-seeking individuals must attend a program from this approved list to receive credentials in the state of Hawaii.
