Overview

Teaching certification in Michigan is typically offered in six grade bands: Birth through Kindergarten (B-K), Grades PreK-3, Grades 3-6, Grades 5-9, Grades 7-12, and PreK-12. The certification for World Languages falls in the PreK-12 ‘content area’ band. Certification in Bilingual education requires an additional certification in a core subject area.

Important to note that candidates wishing to become certified in world languages are required to meet oral proficiency standards in addition to passing the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC). The Michigan Department of Education requires that world language teacher candidates demonstrate oral proficiency in their language through ACTFL (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages) OPI or OPIc tests. Teacher candidates who wish to teach French, German, Italian, Latin, or Spanish must demonstrate an “Advanced-Low” level of proficiency. Candidates who wish to teach Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, or Russian must demonstrate an “Intermediate-High” level of proficiency to become certified.
