Candidates who currently reside and teach in another country or who completed their educator preparation program in another country may be eligible to apply for certification in South Carolina. Educators currently living in a country with which the United States of America have established a Memorandum of Understanding may seek sponsorship to temporarily gain certification and teach in South Carolina through the International Visiting Teachers Program. The South Carolina Department of Education (SCDE) is designated as a sponsor of a J-1 Exchange Visitor Teacher Program by the United States Department of State (USDOS). The program provides foreign nationals with opportunities to participate in exchange programs in the US and then return home to share their experiences. Through the USDOS designation, the SCDE is able to sponsor teachers from other countries to teach in South Carolina as part of an Exchange Visitor Teacher Program.
